Review

This set is another of the many film and TV related products that Airfix made. When the set was released in 1968 there was a successful NBC TV series which Airfix must have hoped would generate good sales. However the set was amongst the first to be dropped when the range was slimmed down a few years later.

Whatever you may think of the way series such as this portrayed Africa, the figures in this set are a fair representation of the characters and story lines. Airfix claimed on its release that the warriors could make good Zulus, but you would have to overlook several points of detail to use them as such. The shield carried by the running warrior is separate and attaches via a peg on the hand, but the fit is not good or firm. The standing warrior has his shield as part of the piece. The European hunter could find a use elsewhere, but the Tarzan figure (which incidentally towers over all the other figures at 25mm tall) is not very useful.

The animals are quite nicely done and look realistic. The zebra could also pass for a donkey, but the elephant could not be used for ancient warfare as it is only the same height as a man, making it a baby. The leaping lion is reminiscent of the Atlantic Gladiators set but is better posed.

The quality of the sculpting is reasonable and the poses OK. For the most part however this is one for collectors who want examples of every set ever made.
