Review

Another non-military set from Airfix, this time from the very early days, when model railways were the target market. Initially this set was sold in a bag with a card header in various designs, and also in a box from the model railway range, but as can be seen from the relatively late product number it was not added to the boxed figure range until many years later.

The figures are particularly short and very thin; they are after all advertised as HO scale, which is about 1/87, and so match the railway scale perfectly well. They are not out of proportion, but their smaller scale makes them less useful for our particular favourite scale. The detail is not good and there is plenty of flash on many parts. The trolleys and machines are particularly subject to large mould marks which have excess plastic, though these are mostly sensibly placed on the undersides and do not spoil the model. The barrel and milk churns could be used to decorate many a country scene, but for most of the pieces the only realistic setting for them is, indeed, a train station.

The set is clearly dated in terms of the fashions and platform equipment, but then again layouts set in the 1950s are still popular today, so that is not really a problem. For those interested in military subjects this does not have much to offer, though many a soldier collector today was once the proud possessor of a train set, and this set will bring back many happy memories.
