One of the many qualities attributed to the Amazons is skill with horses. As a warrior race, the use of horses is likely to be important, and when it is remembered that the myth of the Amazons is often claimed to have its origins with one or other of the peoples of the Steppe, such horsemanship seems inevitable. Unsurprisingly, several of these poses are using the bow, like any good Steppe race, and the rest have swords, spears or javelins. The usual difficulties of moulding such warriors with a normal two-piece mould are much in evidence here as many of the poses are quite flat. So we have the figure holding a javelin against her helmet, and spears that are pointed up or to the side, but not forward. The second pictured figure with sword pointing more or less forward is a slightly awkward but certainly not flat pose, but otherwise it is a case of waving weapons in the air rather than actually using them on an enemy. Nevertheless that is a common theme in cavalry sets, and no worse here than in many others.

The Amazons wear the kind of clothing and armour we might expect, and there is much bare breast and bare bottom on show. However unlike the companion set of dismounted Amazons, more here wear a helmet or at least a cap. The sculpting is reasonable, and the same goes for the horses. They are all in galloping poses, and have simple saddlecloths but no saddles in the modern sense. Generally the figures fit the horses very well. The two dismounted figures might be taken as warriors of rank. Certainly the one in our third row has a particularly impressive crest on her helmet, but in many ways it is the other foot figure that catches the eye. In one sense this is just another figure of an Amazon dressed in a robe and Corinthian helmet and holding a spear and shield, but she also looks very like the Greek goddess Athena, who was regularly depicted in exactly this way. Since she is much more modestly dressed than her comrades, this gives this figure potential for use in a historical setting, even if just as a statue. Other than that of course there is nothing much that can be done with these figures in a historical context, and they do have a fair amount of flash unfortunately, but if you want to create some diorama based on Greek mythology then this set would be an interesting place to start.
